When thinking about beauty and health products, bone broth isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. It isn’t the 10th or 20th thing that comes to mind. Most of us think of, and reach for, overly advertised, chemically laden cosmetics, or less than quality, extremely expensive, supplements, recommended by unqualified sales reps, who do not consider an individual’s needs. If not from an ethical Company using high quality ingredients, most of these products don’t contain enough of the active agents to make a difference anyway.
Well…. times are changing. Getting back to basics has become the new way to gain health and vitality. Who knew that a simple soup base had healing, anti-aging properties much stronger than all the crazy cosmetics and confusing supplements on the market today! Old World is catching up to New World. Thousands of years of knowledge, and tradition, are regaining popularity, and for good reason.
Since the mid 1900’s and the beginning of Corporate Food Conglomerates, homemade bone broth was replaced by an extremely toxic chemical called MSG. MSG took place of broths in the food industry because the trend was moving toward pre-packaged and prepared foods. MSG was cheap, quick, less work, and could be used to enhance the flavor of any food, sweet or savory. Little was known at the time of the effect this chemical would have on the human body. As science progressed, so did the understanding of these dangerous food additives.
Society is becoming more and more educated and conscious about food, and the source form which it comes. Chemicals like MSG have lost popularity. MSG has been removed from most foods because of the knowledge of its toxicity and high allergenic response in some individuals.
Enter the age of our Elder’s wisdom. Bone broth, with all of its wonderful protein and mineral rich nutrition is regaining popularity.Â
BONE BROTH BENEFITS
Bone Broth contains the perfect amounts of proteins, glycosaminoglycans and minerals. Let me explain…
PROTEINS
Proteins at their simplest form are called amino acids (AAs). AAs are the building blocks of all living organisms. They are the base of the body’s structure and are found in every human cell. Collagen and gelatin are only two of these beauty building structure supportive AAs found in bone broth. Bone broth is beneficial to digestion, rebuilding ligaments, muscle and bone. Not to mention what it does for our hair and skin.
GLYCOSAMINOGLYCANS
Glycosaminoglycans or GAGs are long chain sugar carbohydrate chains found in a number of cells in the body. Allow me to follow with a caveat…. biological sugar and the ingestible food product sugar are entirely different. GAGs support collagen and elastin and keep the cells bouncy. There are three types of GAGs: chondroitin sulfate, glucosamine, and hyaluronic acid. All of these great substances help reduce inflammation and supports fluidity of joints, helping to reduce pain from join deterioration.
MINERALS
Bone broth contains mainly calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and potassium, along with other trace minerals. Adding a small amount of vinegar to the liquid draws these minerals out of the bones. We know this because the bones become crumbly and fall apart easily when the broth is finished. Mineral rich foods help to alkalize the blood and tissues, creating a difficult environment for all kinds of disease to propagate. This is very good news for all of us. Minerals help develop healthy teeth, bones, muscle growth and muscle contraction. They also support the nervous system and proper heart function.

Bone Broth Recipe

- 4 – 8 lbs Organic Bones (Beef, Veal, Chicken, Duck)
- 3 cups onion
- 3 cups carrot
- 3 cups celery
- 4 bay leaves
- ¼ bunch fresh thyme
- 1-2 tsp grey or pink salt
- ¼ cup Apple Cider Vinegar
- Â Purified water
DIRECTIONS:
Roast bones in the oven at 350 degrees for 45-1hr. This caramelizes the bone and brings out the flavor. Remove bones from oven. Take marrow out of bone (can be frozen and used for gravies etc.)
Roughly chop the vegetables and place in slow cooker along with the marrow free bones. Cover with pure water making sure the water is above the bones. Add salt, herbs and vinegar.
Allow broth to simmer for 24 hrs. Cool, strain and serve. The discarded vegetables and bones may be used in composte.
When making this beautiful broth, put your love and healing intention into the motion of mixing magic! The benefits are endless, and I could go on and on. At the end of the day, to promote healthy digestion, decrease inflammation and support all of your body’s systems, bone broth is your best bet!
** For my loving Vegan friends; You will also benefit from the high mineral all vegetable broth which alkalizes and supports the immune system. Add potatoes instead of bones and cook the same way.
Love life and live well. Wish you all the best.
